Tectonics is a Music Festival curated by Ilan Volkov, proudly presented by Iceland Symphony Orchestra. It takes place in Harpa Concert Hall in Reykjavík 16.- 17. April 2015
Tectonics Reykjavik Festival will take place April 16 & 17, 2015 in Harpa Concert Hall, Reykjavík, Iceland. Founded in Reykjavík in 2012, this will be the fourth edition of the festival in Iceland and the 10th edition worldwide as it has now reached Scotland, Israel; the United States and Australia.
Ilan Volkov is the curator of Tectonics and, as before, Tectonics will be full of energetic experiments and surprises with emphasis on mixing performers and composers with different backgrounds and styles.
The Iceland Symphony Orchestra will premier works by Icelandic composers and artists Áki Ásgeirsson, Magnús Pálsson, Kristín Þóra Haraldsdóttir, Hlynur Aðils Vilmarsson and Úlfur Hansson. The orchestra will perform a work by Iancu Dumitrescu which had its premiere in Tectonics, Glasgow in 2013 with Stephen O’Malley as soloist. Furthermore, the orchestra will play a piece by Jon Rose and Elena Kats Chernin for Jon Rose as an improvising soloist and orchestra, premiered at Tectonics, Adelaide in 2014. Also on the orchestra’s program, works by Catherine Lamb and Klaus Lang who also will give a solo performance on the final show of the festival.
Other featured artists include Robyn Schulkowsky, Alvin Curran, Stephen O’Malley and Joel Stern, as well as performances by experimental duos Part Wild Horses Mane On Both Sides and Usurper.
Last but not least, the festival opens with a collaborative performance by Icelandic composer’s collective S.L.Á.T.U.R and instrument builder Sarah Kenchington. Furthermore, performances by renowned Icelandic composer Anna Thorvaldsdottir and the up-and-coming Bergrún Snæbjörnsdóttir will be a part of the late-night shows in the delightful Nordic Lights Hall in Harpa.
The Icelandic Youth Orchestra and students from the Iceland Academy of the Arts will join the Iceland Symphony Orchestra in performances of new pieces by Robyn Schulkowsky and Alvin Curran, commissioned by Tectonics to be performed in Harpa’s Foyer.
